THE
TERRITORIAL ARMY
There are two
types of units, Independent and Specialist.
In addition, there are units specifically for students based around
the universities of the East Midlands.
INDEPENDENT
UNITS
Independent
units do not expect a recruit to have any previous military skills
or experience. They train one evening a week, and about one weekend
a month plus a two week annual camp.
Within East
Midlands, there are a good variety of units to choose from. All
offer the same basic training, then additional technical skills
are taught depending on the role of the unit. Many units have a
large vehicle fleet and also train volunteers on a Category C driving
licence.

SPECIALIST
UNITS
A Specialist
unit only accepts people who have already acquired specialised civilian
or military skills. Recruits undergo basic military training, but
train far less frequently than members of an Independent unit. Two
weekends plus a two week annual camp per year is the norm. However,
there are plentiful opportunities for trained specialists to volunteer
for major exercises and operations with the regular armed forces.

UNIVERSITY
UNITS
These units
tailor their training around the academic year, and are very conscious
of the need for their students to devote time to their studies.
Students are paid for training, just like members of the Territorial
Army. The summer vacation offers the time for attachments to regular
units, ships or RAF bases and a range of adventure training opportunities
and expeditions.
